Pearson 303 1985 “Full Circle”

Here is a rare opportunity to own a well-maintained Northern freshwater boat, from Lake Michigan currently in Sodus Bay, NY Lake Ontario. The boat’s third owner.

The 303 was produced by Pearson Yachts between 1983 and 1986 and over 300 boats were built. With an eye-pleasing sheer and unpretentious good looks, the 303 is an economical and versatile family cruiser. The hull is a one piece hand laid layup, with a balsa cored deck on the horizontal surfaces and plywood coring in the high load areas. With its broad beam, the 303 is quite stiff and likes to be sailed on her feet. She has a sea-kindly motion offering a dry ride combined with a comfortable “big boat” feel.

Four adults can occupy the cockpit in comfort and she is easily sailed short-handed. She has had three owners since new, and has truly been kept in good condition.  Below deck, the galley is located to port just forward of the companionway, and has  adequate counter space and onboard food storage. She has teak bulkheads, teakinterior tim, and a teak-and-holly cabin sole.

The companionway steps are easily removed to expose the two-piece box surrounding the 13-horsepower Yanmar diesel that will move her at 6 knots under power.

Aft to starboard is a large quarter berth capable of sleeping two persons; a forward-facing chart table is fitted at which the navigator can work while seated at the head of the quarter berth.

The port and starboard settees in the main salon double as comfortable berths with the seatbacks removed. A dining table folds down from the starboard bulkhead and has a leaf that extends to the port bench to allow seating for four.

Forward of the main salon and to port is a hanging locker, opposite which is the head compartment. Large for a 30-foot boat, it has standing headroom, a basin with cold pressurized water, a handheld shower, and an electric pump to drain the sump overboard.

Forward, a bi-fold door opens into a truly comfortable owner's cabin with a small bureau and a large V-berth. Headroom throughout is more than 6 feet, in the main cabin, in the owner’s cabin, and in the bathroom. Large opening deck hatches, above both the forward and main cabins, and four opening ports on each.

Complete list of maintenance upgrades since the current owner took delivery of the boat. A very good indication of the condition and care that has been afforded this boat. See details at the bottom of the listing.

As an educator Mike Foley taught high school technology and served as the district IT Director for the Honeoye Central School District located in the Finger Lakes. Mike retired from teaching and continued to grow his large format printing and graphic design business. Always involved with boats and boatbuilding, Mike has long been associated with boat owners and marinas in the Sodus Bay area. A former wooden boat owner Mike was bitten by the racing bug in 1992, purchased a J/30 from RCR and campaigned the boat for 12 years.

A member of the Sodus Bay Yacht Club, Mike has served on many regatta committees and held several officer and director positions. Mike’s relationship with the Lake Yacht Racing Association (LYRA) has spanned many years, including serving as President from 2004-06. Race administration and regatta organization have consumed much of his time for the past 26 years on Lake Ontario. Involvement with youth sailing led Mike to become President of Central New York Sailing Association (CNYSA) where he continues to chair the annual “Centrals on Sodus” open regatta for juniors and adults. As a strong proponent of youth sailing and education Mike has served as President of the Sodus Bay Junior Sailing Assn. (SBJSA) for several years and is now the Director of Fleet. Under his direction SBJSA has evolved from a summer sailing youth program to a US Sailing Accredited Community Boating Center, serving all ages.

Mike is a US Sailing Level 1 instructor as well as a certified Club Race Officer. He is often found at area regattas with his center console boat serving as mark-set officer. Mike and his wife Jan have remodeled the family cottage in Sodus Point and are making it their home. Feel free to reach out to Mike when visiting Great Sodus Bay.
