This Catalina was first designed by Sparkman & Stevens as an IOR one ton design racing yacht. When Catalina bought the mold in the late 1970's Frank Butler re-designed the interior and deck house and raised the mast about 10 feet. This created a wonderful combination racer/cruiser and by 1990 Catalina had sold 366 of these yachts.
'Hiawatha' was built in 1983 as hull number 247 with a sail number of 15130. She began her sailing career as one of the 15-20 Catalina 38's in the Detroit/Windsor area that raced one design. She was raced as "Ransom' and "Foci" until the one design fleet broke apart in the late 1990's. She was then purchased in 2002 to begin racing on Lake Ontario.
Highlights of her sailing career include:
LYRA-Boat of the Year [Lake Ontario & eastern Lake Erie] 2006
Chicago to Mackinac Island Yacht Race- 1st in Section and 12th overall [out of 375 yachts] 2005
Lake Erie Interclub Cruise- 1st in division 2004 & 2006
Lake Ontario 300-1st in division & 2nd overall 2006
In 2005 'Hiawatha' sailed the major long distance races on the other Great Lakes including the Port Huron to Mackinac race[4th in division], Chicago to Mackinac race [1st in Division], trans-Superior Yacht Race [2nd in division and Trans-Erie Yacht race [1st in Division]. Besides being very well equipped for racing [she meets off-shore category 3 race safety requirements] she is equally equipped for cruising.
